Why Your Hiring Plan Keeps Failing

We know that finding the right hires is no easy task, but we also have a pretty good idea why it seems nearly impossible for you.

If you’re struggling to build the team you envision, stop making these mistakes:

  1. You’re overlooking Quality for Quantity. A resume can only tell you so much of the story. A wise person once said, “The person I want on my team isn’t necessarily the one with the most skills, but instead, the one with the drive and the intelligence to build those skills; the one with the heart and the dedication to get in the trenches with me when problems arise. There are some qualities that can’t be learned, so I want the one who already possesses those.” Ok, I don’t know if a wise person really said that, but we just did.
  2. You’re waiting too long. Going along with our last point, you won’t want to invest the time into any training if you are waiting until it’s “Mission Critical” to get someone onboard. Last minute hires will have you overlooking major potential for great, lasting team members, just to get the skills needed in the chair quickly.
  3. You’re lacking direction. If there is any disconnect between the hiring team and the executive team, the mission will inevitably fail. Whether it is regarding salary or budget, the specifics of the project or job description, or coherency on the interview process, a candidate who senses inconsistencies will be reluctant to move forward.
  4. You’re lacking inclusivity. This goes in either direction. If your team is a tight knit group, the focus may end up too heavily on a candidate’s personality rather than their potential to be successful in the position. Or, if your team is lacking diversity, the candidate may not be able to comfortably envision themselves within that environment.
  5. You’re invisible Candidates want to feel like they are being given the opportunity to be a part of something great. And they will certainly do a search to quantify that value. Simply having a website and a few LinkedIn posts just won’t cut it.
  6. You’re relying on job postings. Consider this: There are thousands of job postings at any given time in one city alone. If you aren’t leveraging all of your options, the odds of a top caliber candidate even seeing your listing are quite low.
