What is Gen Z doing to the work place!?

Guest Writer: Henry Grosso – High School Intern

Every generation has its unique way of working. Traditionalists are known for being the most loyal generation of employees. Baby boomers have a reputation of being the teachers of a workplace. Gen X is known for its adaptability, and Gen Y for its diversified education and innovation. So what will Gen Z’s legacy be?

Gen Z is possibly the greatest outlier of them all. Being a generation that was raised on technology, Gen Z’s impact on the workforce will be very different from previous generations. Gen Zers are more interested in on-the-go jobs rather than your typical desk job. Because of the fast pace technologies that have been accessible in our work environment, it has become something that we crave in our careers. The more advanced technology incorporated in a Gen Zers workplace, the more desirable it is.

In addition, Gen Z has come into adulthood during a time where societal norms have been questioned, challenged, and moved out of the way. As generations grow to be more aware and proactive in terms of inclusion, mental health, and work/life balance, companies are constantly changing the way they operate in support of its employees and the company’s overall progress. Companies looking to merge with this new generation are very community-based and want their employees to feel as if their work environment is friendly, inclusive and flexible. Companies have adjusted their benefits such as more paid time off, mental health days, or activities that create a sense of balance.

The idea of a household dynamic has also changed drastically in Gen Z. Generationally, the message these young women are receiving about their future is one of financial independence and a successful career. Gen Z women are joining the workforce in a time where women are highly accepted, encouraged, and integrated in the workforce, as well as leadership roles. According to a Pew Research study the percentage of dual-income households was 25% in 1960, and more recently it was recorded that over 50% of households are dual-income. Because dual-income households have become more common, the workforce has had to evolve in correlation to this norm. Without this overhaul of how business is run, we could see the end of the family structure as we know it.

So the question is, what do those entering the workforce want to see even more of? People entering the workforce today are doing so with great knowledge in technology,  including high-level programs for collaboration and project management. People want to see more equality and progressive work spaces that encourage mental health, balance and flexibility. Technology allows people to have more flexible schedules and to have greater values of trust and balance. Gen Z continues to change the world, and it is with advancement in technology that this generation continues to change the workforce.
