There’s certainly no shortage of memes and TikToks about disgruntled employees and workplace stress. And we’ll be the first to admit it – they’re hilarious! And unfortunately, they’re all too relatable for many.
While it’s not uncommon to dread the workday, it’s also not inevitable! You could share every “I hate my job” meme out there, but we think being proactive toward change is probably the better move.
Here are a few ways to improve your experience at a job you don’t love – but still NEED.
- Speak up. No, we don’t suggest you go on a rant to your manager. But we do recommend asking for the things that could make your experience better. Maybe new processes could make your tasks run smoother, or investing in software could streamline the team’s workflow. It may surprise you how much your employer appreciates and respects the confidence and initiative it displays to suggest positive changes in the workplace.
- Improve your skills. It can be extremely frustrating when it takes research, trial and error, and too much extra time to complete tasks that you know should be simpler. Fine-tuning the skill-set needed to be more proficient in your current role could vastly improve your experience! The great thing is, many employers are happy to enroll their team in courses and training that will enhance their performance. And there are plenty of free resources out there as well!
- Seek new opportunities. Depending on your industry, there could be other positions within your company that are more suited for your skills, personality, and passions. Don’t hesitate to express your interest in those opportunities as they arise. And of course, submitting your resume to job openings that catch your attention outside of your company is an option as well.
- Find balance. Whether you love your job or hate it, how you spend your time when you aren’t there has a tremendous impact on how you feel during work hours. No one should eat, sleep, and breathe work! Establishing a routine that allows for a healthy personal and family life, as well as time for self-care, can create a major shift in how you feel about those hours spent in the office – or anywhere for that matter.
