What to expect from AI in 2022

The pace of technological change is unlike ever before – our technology is building technology at this point – and it’s showing no signs of slowing down!

If you’re over the age of 45, it’s likely you made it all the way through college without the internet at your desk, let alone your fingertips. And soon enough we’ll be coming out of the womb with access to the metaverse. That’s a pretty incredible transformation of the world in only half a lifetime!

So with technology advancing even more rapidly each year, what does that mean for the next half??

We may not have all the answers at this point, but we do have  some predictions for what these advances could mean for us all, personally and professionally, in the coming year.

  1. Video – According to Cisco, over 80% of Internet data in 2022 will be video. And while it has become our main source of entertainment, information, and news, Forbes reports that relatively little focus has been placed on building deep learning-based products and capabilities specifically for video, compared to other modalities, such as image and text. A boom in AI tools for video search, editing, and generation is expected to be seen in 2022.
  1. Climate – Climate tech is exploding in the world of startups right now! Forbes predicts that those developing tools for the new carbon economy will be making the largest burst onto the scene. But as we move toward change for our environment, all climate tech is expected to be center stage this coming year.
  1. Reinforcement Learning – Most of the AI you are familiar with currently does not use reinforcement learning. Instead, it is given real world data – like an “answer key”. Reinforcement learning allows AI to open-endedly explore the environment, and learn about the world as it goes. This opens the door for AI capabilities beyond what we have seen before. DeepMind, the most advanced AI research organization in the world, has said that reinforcement learning has the potential to take us all the way to “artificial general intelligence”.  In other words, this is the next step toward creating machines that can learn, think, and make decisions.
  1. Responsible AI – You know the saying – “With great power, comes great responsibility!” If the thought of free-thinking robots entered your mind – and scared you just a bit – you’re not alone! With unprecedented AI advancements, should bring about extensive development of tools and functionality to control bias and ensure responsible A.I use, as well as a more diligent focus on ethics training.

Whether Artificial Intelligence excites you or frightens you, it is undoubtedly the very foundation of our future. Of course, like anything else, the more you understand, the less you fear. So whether you are completely out of the loop, or a bonafide tech-head, it will serve you well to get as much education and training as possible for your future and your career.
